The Plan Details page displays comprehensive information about the design, including what additional house features are available. The house plan set options (prices are displayed next to each option) that are available are displayed in the House Plan Options Available box in the lower-right corner. If you decide to purchase a plan, click Purchase Plan and follow the links to finalize your purchase. You can also begin the purchasing procedure by clicking Purchase Plan from the Search Results page.

The more features you select, the more closely the house plans returned will meet your requirements for budget, space, and lifestyle. Once you find house plans that interest you, you can save your searches, as well as record the plan number for each house design. It's easy to find a house again by using the Search by Plan Number option located on the Home page under the Quick Search box.

More Choices Better Results

If your searches are returning too many house plans, go to Advanced Search to use house style options and more feature selections, which will return houses that more closely match your house plan requirements. If you'd like assistance before trying Advanced Search, the following information should get you started.

Using Advanced Search

Instead of spending hours pouring over catalogues and long listings of other websites, you can spend less than 30 minutes to narrow your results to approximately a dozen house plans to consider for your final selection. Here's how to use Advanced Search:

1. From any page, click Advanced Search on the main navigation bar.
2. Select a house type from the checkboxes under House Type.
3. Indicate with your selections and entries for each of the following:

  • Square footage (You can be specific or give a range with a minimum and a maximum.)
  • Number of levels
  • Number of bedrooms (you may select more than one)
  • Garage size (number of stalls) (you may select more than one)
  • Number of bathrooms (you may select more than one)
  • House Width and Depth
  • CAD file availability

(all styles can be left blank)

4. Select the house styles that interest you in the checkboxes listed under House Style (you may select more than one).

SEARCH TIP: If you're not sure of the style you're looking for, select All House Styles, and Advanced Search will return all styles that meet your other feature selections. Once you've browsed several house styles with your general requirements, you can return to Advanced Search and create searches for the styles you prefer.

5. Select the additional options you want included in your search listed under Lifestyle Features.
6. After selecting all the features you want to include in your search, click Search.

House plans matching your feature selections are returned in a Search Results page.

SEARCH TIP: If your search is not returning any house plans, you may be checking features that are contradicting each other like "upstairs master" and "single-story." Consequently, house plans that might otherwise be found are not included in your search results. Review your feature selections. If you find any that are contradictory, reconfigure your feature selections. If you don't find any contradictions, try eliminating some of your selections and start with fewer types and styles.

7. From the Search Results page, click View Plan Details for any house design.

The Plan Details page displays comprehensive information about the design, including what additional house features are available. The house plan set options (prices are including next to each option) that are available are displayed in the House Plan Options Available box in the lower-right corner. If you decide to purchase a plan, click Plan Order Options and follow the links to finalize your purchase. You can also begin the purchasing procedure by clicking Plan Order Options from the Search Results page.

Although you don't need to select features from every category, the more features you do select, the more closely the plans returned from your search will match your expectations and requirements for budget, space, and lifestyle. If you're still not sure how to proceed, read the following to help you determine what features to select.

Selecting the Right Features for You

Style names may not have the same meaning for you that they have for designers. What is the difference, for example, between a Mediterranean style and a Spanish style? a traditional style and one called Early American?

If you're not sure what you're looking for, select All Styles and then browse through the thumbnail pictures until you have a better idea of what style suits your community, lifestyle, and taste. Once you've identified your favorite styles, you'll be closer to making your final selection.

If you're not sure about the features you're looking for or want a better idea of the choices you have with Advanced Search, take a few moments to consider the following questions about house types, house styles, and lifestyle features before using Advanced Search.

House Type

The following considerations that will help determine the "footprint" of your home as well as what the primary function of the house will be, such as a residence, vacation home, or even a rental:

  • What is your target square footage?
  • Are you looking for a single-family dwelling or one that accommodates more than one family? Are you considering a duplex?
  • Is this a vacation home?
  • What are the minimum and maximum measurements you're considering for your home's square footage, and width and depth?
  • How many bedrooms would you like to include? How many bathrooms?
Lifestyle Features

Where will you be spending most of your time in your new house? Working, entertaining friends, raising a family, enjoying your favorite activities during retirement? The following considerations will help you configure the interior of your house and what special features to include:

  • Would you like a porch? Do you envision it covered, wrap-around, or screened.
  • Would you like a courtyard as part of your home's configuration?
  • Does your lot have a view? Is it narrow or on a hillside or corner?
  • What kind of living space would you like? Are you thinking of a great room or family room? Would you like vaulted ceilings? Is an open floor plan important?
  • For your bedrooms, would you like the master suite on the main floor or upstairs? Do you need two master suites? A nursery? A teen suite? A guest room or in-law suite?
  • Are there other considerations like an unfinished basement, or do you need your house to be handicap accessible.
If you have determined what house styles interest you and some or all of the answers to these questions, you're ready to use the
Advanced Search.
